When Google Stores the URL but Customers Cannot See It
A website can be entered in the Business Profile editor and still fail to appear publicly if the edit is under review or Google cannot confirm the URL. Start by checking the edit status and the public profile in Search and Maps. Do not assume the field is working simply because the URL remains visible inside the editor.
The website button is often the bridge from a profile view to deeper service information, forms, and bookings. Our Miami GBP guide explains why that handoff matters to conversion, not just traffic.
Check the Website Itself Before Blaming the Profile
Google’s Business Profile guidance says the website field should use the full URL and the site should be accessible to Googlebot. Make sure the destination loads over HTTPS, does not block crawlers, does not redirect through a broken tracking chain, and represents the same business as the profile.
Also check whether the website is indexed and healthy in Search Console. A profile link should point to the canonical customer-facing business site or the most appropriate location page, not to an unrelated domain, temporary staging site, or URL that immediately forwards somewhere else.
Read Accepted, Pending, and Not-Approved States Differently
If the edit is pending, give the review process time and preserve the submission date. If it is not approved, compare the site with the business name, address or service-area model, phone number, and other profile information. If the link repeatedly disappears after being accepted, document the pattern before escalating.
One useful diagnostic is to separate a field problem from a website problem. If the same URL cannot be crawled or indexed normally, fix the website first. If the site is healthy and the profile alone refuses the field, the support case should focus on the Business Profile edit.
Use the Link to Continue the Customer’s Decision
When the website link returns, send visitors to a page that matches the profile and the business model. A multi-location company may need a specific location page. A service-area company may need a service or regional page that explains what happens next. The homepage is not automatically the best destination for every local profile.
Track the click with a stable UTM convention when appropriate so GA4 can separate Business Profile website traffic from other organic visits. Do not use a tracking setup so complicated that the final URL becomes unreliable.
Protect the Website Field During Site Migrations
If the company changes domains, rebuilds the website, or changes important URLs, update the profile as part of the migration plan. Keep redirects working, preserve location relevance, and test the public link immediately after launch. A website migration that breaks the GBP destination can convert an SEO project into a lead-loss problem.
For businesses where the profile and website need to work as one local acquisition path, YSH Local SEO and Maps strategy coordinates the listing, site architecture, and measurement.
The Website-Link Rule
Confirm the site is crawlable and represents the same business, check the edit status, then make the destination useful to the customer who just left the profile.
