How do I request ownership of a Google Business Profile someone else manages?

When the Business Exists on Google but You Do Not Control It

If a verified Google Business Profile is already managed by someone else, an authorized business representative should request access to the existing profile rather than create a duplicate. Google has a formal ownership process because the listing’s history, reviews, visibility, and customer actions belong to the business entity, not to whichever marketing account happens to be logged in today.

Before starting, make sure you are signed into the Google account that should manage the business long term. Our Google Business Profile guide for Miami businesses treats ownership as part of protecting the profile as an operating asset.

Use the Existing Profile’s Ownership Workflow

For a storefront or hybrid business, Google currently directs authorized users to find the existing business, select the access request option, and submit the ownership request. The current owner is notified and has three days to respond. If access is approved, the new authorized user can manage the existing profile without rebuilding it.

Service-area businesses can require a different support path for an ownership transfer, so do not assume every profile presents the same buttons. If Google does not show a normal claim flow, use the ownership support route for the existing listing.

Prove the Relationship to the Business, Not Just Knowledge of the Listing

An ownership request is strongest when the account and supporting business information make the relationship clear. Use a company-domain email where practical, keep the website and public business identity accurate, and be ready to verify the business if the workflow requires it. Knowing the phone number, profile ID, or login history does not by itself prove current authority.

When an employee, former agency, franchise partner, or previous owner controls the profile, separate the people problem from the entity problem. The goal is to transfer or add legitimate management access without changing the business name, creating a second listing, or disrupting customer-facing information.

What Happens if the Current Owner Does Not Respond?

Google’s ownership workflow can provide a claim or verification option after the response window in some cases, but that option is not guaranteed for every profile. Keep the confirmation email because it contains the request status and any next step Google makes available. If the request is denied, there may be an appeal or edit path depending on the situation.

Do not flood the profile with repeated access requests from multiple accounts. Maintain one clear case history and document which Google account should become the long-term owner.

Set Up Governance After Access Is Restored

Once control is back, remove access that no longer belongs, keep at least one stable owner account under the business’s control, and give agencies or staff only the role they need. Owners and managers have different capabilities, so profile governance should survive employee turnover and vendor changes.

For companies where profile access, local visibility, reviews, tracking, and lead generation are all business-critical, YSH Local SEO and Maps management includes account governance as part of the local search system.

The Ownership Rule

Recover the existing legitimate profile instead of creating a replacement. Use Google’s access process, prove authorization, and leave the business with a durable ownership structure after the immediate problem is solved.
